Senior Principal Scientist
Regulatory Sciences

John H. Miller IV, PhD. is a Senior Principal Scientist in Analytical Sciences for Altria Client Services (ALCS) in Richmond, VA. In this role, he leads a group of scientists that are responsible for developing methods for the analysis of constituents in reduced-risk tobacco products.

Dr. Miller has worked at Altria since 2004 and has served in multiple technical roles. In 2014, he rejoined Analytical Sciences, where he built infrastructure and testing capabilities to support product development initiatives and regulatory reporting requirements. Dr. Miller led a team accountable for developing methods and conducting routine testing for e-vapor products. In addition, his team established dissolution testing for smokeless tobacco products and novel oral tobacco products to support our science strategies. In his current role, Dr. Miller is responsible for developing our non-targeted analysis program for the chemical characterization of reduced harm products.

Before joining the Altria family of companies, Dr. Miller was a manager at Pharmaceutical Product Development Inc. where he led a team of scientists responsible for developing bioanalytical methods for investigational new drugs. The team focused on analyzing trace levels of drugs and metabolites in biological samples using LC/MS/MS, GC/MS and capillary electrophoresis.

Dr. Miller is recognized as a technical expert for chemical analysis of both e-vapor products and smokeless tobacco products. He has been actively involved in development of methods for testing harmful and potentially harmful constituents in in support of CORESTA’s e-vapor working group and the ISO/TC126 working group. He currently serves as a project manager for ISO TC126/SC3/WG3 which is responsible for developing methods for the characterization of constituents in aerosol from e-vapor products.

Dr. Miller has presented more than 20 presentations at multiple conferences and has coauthored 10 publications in peer reviewed journals.
