Matt Melvin, Ph.D., serves as a Principal Scientist II, Analytical Sciences, Regulatory Affairs for Altria Client Services (ALCS) in Richmond, VA. In this role, he leads multiple analytical sciences research and development projects to understand the fundamental organic chemistry occurring in the aerosolization of tobacco products. Dr. Melvin also provides technical oversight for other scientists and supports Altria’s external engagement strategies.

Dr. Melvin's current research focuses on the development and validation of analytical methods to support novel product platforms.  Additionally, he investigates thermal degradation processes that occur at sub-pyrolysis temperatures. His research focus includes analytical and organic chemistry as well as the use of basic medicinal chemistry principals.

Prior to joining Altria in 2015, Dr. Melvin held multiple positions at other major U.S. tobacco companies and served for 8 years as a medicinal chemist at Targacept, Inc. in Winston-Salem, NC. 

Dr. Melvin is co-author of more than 40 scientific peer-reviewed publications and patents in his area of expertise. He is also co-author of over 30 presentations given at various national and international scientific meetings.
