Analytical Science

The team characterizes traditional tobacco products as well as potentially reduced-risk alternatives. By providing robust laboratory-based data and insights, Analytical Science helps Altria expand our portfolio of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-authorized, smoke-free products.
Our methods are validated in accordance with the International Conference on Harmonization method validation guideline Q2(R1) Validation of Analytical Procedures: Text and Methodology. We maintain a robust quality system that is accredited to ISO 17025, which provides assurance that the data we generate is precise and accurate.
One of the most important focus areas for our Analytical Science team is working with U.S. and international stakeholders to develop robust standardized methods for the analysis of harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) in tobacco products.
Our scientists serve as national experts and project leaders on the ISO Technical Committee 126 for tobacco and tobacco products and its U.S. mirror committee. We also actively engage with the Cooperation Centre for Scientific Research Relative to Tobacco (CORESTA) through leadership roles on the Scientific Commission and in various Subgroups and Task Forces. CORESTA study results and Recommended Methods are published at www.coresta.org for use by all stakeholders.
